  • I have eaten 6 "fun size" Snickers for breakfast (nothing fun about improperly-sized candy).
  • I caught Sam standing next to the counter in mine and Steve's bathroom right before Steve left for work. I got him down and had him say bye to Steve and didn't think twice about it. Later, while brushing my teeth, I came to realize that while I was out talking to Steve, Sam was in the bathroom, smearing Steve's new roll-on eucalyptus deodorant (this is Korea) all over the bristles of my toothbrush. You can't untaste that.
  • Molly and Sam just helped themselves to an entire container of raisins from the pantry. And I didn't stop them.
  • Sam is pushing around a plastic shopping cart full of my (clean) panties.
  • My sweet granddaddy passed away yesterday. I got to visit with him and my grandmother before we flew out of Atlanta, and it is very weird to say goodbye to someone like that while they're still alive. I knew when I was hugging him that I would never see him again. And even though I got my goodbye in and grieved a bit then, it still doesn't make it hurt any less now.
  • Related: I am a very ugly crier. I appear to have been punched in the eyelids multiple times and I have no intentions of venturing out in public until it's time for trunk or treat tonight. (I looked in the mirror earlier and said, "Sweet Moses, MY EYES!" And Sam offered to kiss them for me to make them "all better." That helped.)
  • Even though I just changed a poopy diaper that makes me wonder if Sam ate a bucket of sand yesterday, I'm still on my way to go eat another Snickers.

This is what real life looks like here today- Molly making a hat for the raisin jar, my undies in a shopping cart, pillows that have no home in this closet-less house, Christmas books, and Sam's favorite bucket of toys to empty out onto the floor.

Why does it make me write a title for every single post? I'm not that creative.

10.28.2013

Remember how I mentioned that I had no desire to blog lately? I was going through my reader and came across this post. Nothing but the last paragraph stood out to me- I'm the only one who is going to tell my stories. I want more words to look back on one day. And one day is coming fast.

((Cue my panic about all my thoughts about all the stories I haven't blogged that I might want to remember one day.))

This blog is almost like that back section of your closet that you keep shoving stuff into and you always procrastinate organizing it. (Or is that just me?) My layout is horrible, things are a bit messy, and my About page says that I'm still PREGNANT WITH MOLLY. So.... hmmm time to spruce things up around here. I actually have a post in my head too. And I wrote notes on my phone so I don't forget to write it. This is about as close to scheduling a post as I wanna get, but at least I finally have something to write about that's not bullet points! (You: Praise Jesus!) So excuse the mess here over the next few days. I am going to attempt to get this ol' girl back up and running!

Annnnnd a gratuitous photo of (the majority of us) dressed up in traditional Korean hanbuk outfits. Sam would rather pick-pocket Steve than be caught dead wearing pink pants. (Although Steve pulls them off well, don't you think?) Definitely a Christmas card contender. (eye roll)

Another bullet-point post because my brain doesn't work well these days

10.24.2013

  • I just ate leftover cheeseburger casserole for lunch with chopsticks because I'm kinda fascinated by them. When we got here I kept saying to Steve, "But why aren't they using SPORKS yet?! Wouldn't that make so much more sense??" And now I get why they use chopsticks. They're fun! (I'm sure there are many more cultural/social/historical reasons why they still use chopsticks, but I am using them because they're fun. And I switch to forks and spoons when I get frustrated.)
  • I took a quiz online about what state I'm most suited to live in and it told me Utah. UTAH! What the french there isn't an ocean next to Utah.
  • Steve is supposed to live in North Carolina, so we'll see how this relationship plays out.
  • We got our HHGs!!! They arrived via lift through our kitchen window last week. Words cannot even express how much I love sleeping in my bed. The second night we had it back, Steve had staff duty, so I got it ALL TO MYSELF. Probably the best night of sleep I've had since we moved.
  • Sam wakes up singing "Happy Birthday" to himself lately. We went to a friend's birthday party last weekend and he was genuinely confused that he wasn't blowing out "kindells" or opening any presents. Apparently he assumed the party was for him. (Awkward!)
  • I went for my first jog in..... oh about 3 months. Possibly longer. It was sad and pathetic and I didn't even make it two miles before I had to walk. As I was heading back up the monster hill to our apartment, feeling down about how much I stink at physical activities, Sam turned around and said, "Good running, Muwm! Good job running!"
  • On a happier note, going on jogs means that I have my BOB back, and my life is once again complete. My children love sitting in that stroller and letting me cart them around. Molly is probably so happy to not be strapped to my sweaty back on the regular. The only problem is, this stroller is like a monster truck compared to all the other Korean strollers. It will only work for outside walking or possibly a mall. (Koreans are very pro-baby-wearing.)
  • I walked over to the desk the other day to find a green Sharpie marker uncapped and the apple on the Macbook colored in. While this initially seems distressing, keep in mind that it COULD HAVE BEEN the white wallpaper. Silver linings, folks.
  • If you ask Molly what a horse says, she neighs and then shakes her head back and forth. You can ask her what a dog, a cat, a cow, a baby, a sheep, and a chicken say and her response will remain the same. Currently it's too cute to correct, although Sam is always next to her shouting out the right answers. I have been working really hard to get her to say "mama". (I realize she is late.... I'm not worried...) Every time I say "mama" she says "dada" and thinks it's hilarious. So yeah. When she wakes up in the night like a newborn these days (wtf Molly?), DADA just won't do, so why do you keep saying his name??? TALK TO ME, MOLLY. LOVE, MAMA
  • I still haven't downloaded the new update for my phone. I'm scared of all the icons changing.
  • I blew up our old DVD player (from college!) by plugging it directly into a Korean outlet (with a converter). Lots of smoke and melting plastic later, we have a new DVD player.
  • The leaves are changing and it continually makes me so happy to live in a place with mountains!
  • Sam peed on the potty. I'm not really forcing it right now (because I refuse to be caged up in this apartment while the weather is so beautiful), but if he asks to sit on it and go, I help him with his diaper and pants. I just got him some Pull-Ups today so maybe that will make things a bit easier. This "potty-training" (in quotes because, not really) thing is slightly frustrating since I made a HUGE deal out of it the first time he peed in there (he used to be terrified of it for some reason) and passed out suckers for everyone because LET'S CELEBRATE the possible rebirth of our bank account that has been slayed by disposable diapers for three years now. Now he will ask to sit on it, force out 4 drops, and ask for a "seshall teet!" (That's Sammy-speak for "special treat" which he equates to a sucker.) And I'm trying to be encouraging but at the same time, no, you don't get a whole freaking sucker for 4 drops. I think you're trying to work the system here. Drop a deuce in that potty and I will make a candy cake topped with 50 burning candles. This is my offer. Take it or leave it.
  • With our HHGs came some of our unopened pantry items. For some reason I had a bunch of the mini cereal boxes and the kids go apeshit to pick out their own and have it for breakfast. I refuse to pay good money for mini boxes of cereal (although fantastic marketing, cereal people!) when I could just trick them into eating regular cereal out of these mini boxes. So I save the empty boxes, stick a plastic baggie filled with regular cereal in them, and tape them shut. They still get to pick out their own special box in the morning, but now they're back to eating Rice Chex instead of All-That-Sugar-Make-Me-Crazy Crunch. (Between the last bullet point and this one, please feel free to send all my Mother Of The Year awards to South Korea.)
  • And I think that's about all I have to say today. I have no desire to blog lately..

My child in seasonally appropriate clothes, folks! Finally!

A picture of the kids before a recent photo session. Because oh yeah, I decided I would open a photography business. Fake it til you make it, right?

Sam's birthday weekend- the condensed version

10.15.2013

Almost Wednesday? Yes? Sounds like it's about time I recapped the weekend then. (Fashionably late, or so I like to think.)

Sam, my firstborn, turned three this past Friday. Bless his heart, we've never celebrated his birthday before. I mean, we celebrated in some half-ass ways, like at the Tennessee State Welcome Center or with a cupcake, but due to Steve's work and deployment, we haven't really celebrated a child's birthday outside of cake. Luckily they are the birthdays that they aren't really aware of. (I will never bust my hump for a one year old's birthday party. I will not. I will not. I will not.) But for this birthday, we had big plans to go to Seoul and do something fun.

But first? Birthday waffles.

We had every intention of hitting up this mega kids cafe, but our craptastic GPS was fully against this plan. Since we were getting to Seoul around lunchtime, we figured we'd have lunch at Yongsan (big Army post in Seoul) and get the kids socks at their mega PX. After all of that (we are not the most efficient time-management people, I'm sure you couldn't tell), we ended up at a massive playground on post. We saw a blackhawk land near us, so for Sam, it was a pretty sweet day. We headed home through tons of traffic and enjoyed the silence of a simultaneous nap.

Is there a sound sweeter than this?

Then we played at the playground on post before ordering a pizza for dinner.

Glorious iPhone photos courtesy of the fact that I cannot take a video, iPhone photos, and real camera photos simultaneously. I know, I'm working on my shortcomings.

His only real request for his birthday was to blow out candles ("bow out kindells"), so we tried to stick candles in every food possible that day.

Yeah.... this cake is lopsided and poorly frosted. And we found out afterwards that he does not care for sprinkles. So.... yeah.

Since our plans for a grand birthday celebration never quite happened, we figured we would spend the rest of the weekend just trying to cram in playgrounds and other fun stuff to make up for the fact that we one hundred percent blow at executing successful birthday celebrations. We started Saturday morning off with a family hike.

Sort of...

Kind of....

There we go! Well, almost. Sorry Molly. I'm more concerned with covering the totally unflattering muffintop that damn Ergo gives me instead of getting you in our family photo (taken by a 60 year old man who whooped my tail when it came to climbing this mountain).

It's starting to get legit chilly here! Bought Sam this outfit at Yongsan PX so we didn't look like abusive parents. (Happy birthday!)

Oops I might have just sharted.

I don't want to spam you with mountain pictures you might have already seen on instagram, so I'll leave it at that. Rest assured though, we had our hineys handed to us on that mountain. And by we, I obviously mean ME because one of us is in extremely good shape and the other two of us were carried via slave labor.

We headed home for lunch (this mountain just so happens to be in our backyard) and then headed out to a playground we found while we were lost one day. (We get lost quite often, but usually end up finding nice things.)

In the summer, this part of the park is a water park. The other half of the park (slightly more impressive) is a regular playground.

Molly- too cool for you. And temples.

Naptime! We hung out at home, cleaned floors, and watched Sam's birthday present- Cars 2- and ate dinner. Then early bedtime for everyone!

It's a glamorous life here, folks.

Sunday morning, we lazed around, made breakfast, then headed up to post. Koreans are not morning people, so since the commissary is run by something like 90% Koreans, it does not open until 11am. Every single day. So that's fun. We made it up there in time to wait outside with all the other impatient Americans. Steve and the kids hit the playground and I got to grocery shop in peace. Huzzah!

Sam prides himself on taking quality photos of me. And his finger.

Later in the afternoon, we headed out to a field Steve found sandwiched in between some apartments in town. And it did not disappoint.

Look how tall these suckers are! An entire city block of this!

Naturally there's a sandbox. This country was built for Sam (and all other toddlers) apparently.

Yeah.... she got one.

Monday morning, we got in the car and didn't even know where we were headed. We just typed something into the GPS and off we went. And our psycho GPS took us right up by North Korea. Not scary at all. In fact, it's so not scary that the Koreans built a super fancy outlet mall right next to the border!

We didn't shop, but we did use their bathrooms and stare at the water fountains and eat lunch at Johnny Rockets after we played on the tiny playground.

The beefed-up security you'd expect when you're sitting on the border of N Korea.

Escalator-watching (they are motion-activated here! Great idea, right?)

She is always trying to ditch us for the cool Koreans. We don't fawn over her red hair like they do.

After lunch, we headed back (a different way) and Steve dropped Molly and me off at the house so she could not nap and took Sam to play at a playground on post. We all reconvened in time to eat bulgogi pizza and splash water everywhere but inside the bathtub.

It was a jam-packed weekend, but it was so fun. I hope Sam had as much fun as the rest of us did. I think it was a great birthday weekend and can't wait to see what year 3 holds for him!

(Also, my apologies to my facebook friends since you have already seen 80% of these photos.)

Sam is 3

10.11.2013

I attempted to do the Pinterest-y "ask your child these questions every year starting on their 3rd birthday" but it ended up going like this:

Me: "What's your favorite color?"

Sam: "Color, bolor!" (dies laughing)

Me: "What's your favorite animal?"

Sam: "Animal, banimal!" (dies laughing)

Me: "What's your favorite toy?"

Sam: "Toy, boy!" (dies laughing)

Me: *searching for the wine*

So since that didn't quite work out, I went with something different (yet still Pinterest-y).

I can't believe this boy is 3, although I also can, if that makes any sense. The beginning of 2 was sometimes difficult, and the middle and end of 2 was most definitely WHINY, but it was also full of actual conversation and seeing him begin to make connections, run faster, become braver, face-plant a lot, and understand some differences between right and wrong. I'm really looking forward to more.

Blessed

Instead of this...

I can't understand ANYTHING here. I wish there were more things in English.

This...

I am so thankful to have the opportunity to live overseas.

Instead of this...

Ugh he's working late AGAIN!

This...

I am so thankful my husband has a job and a paycheck.

Instead of this...

The commissary here only stocks three types of yogurt.

This...

I am so thankful to have access to familiar groceries and the option to go off post for more abundant food options.

Instead of this...

I'm so tired of sleeping on this air mattress... (which broke this morning)

This...

I am so thankful to have a roof over my head and a bed on its way (somewhere out there).

Instead of this...

I'm sick of living so far from my family and am jealous of people who are so close to theirs.

This...

I am so thankful to have family worth missing.

Instead of this...

I don't wanna cook dinner tonight. These kids will only eat a few bites and then make a huge mess.

This...

I am so thankful to have food to cook, a clean place to cook it, and children who are well-fed (even if they are picky and messy).

Instead of this...

I hate the medical care here and I'm so tired of taking my kids to these appointments.

This...

I am so thankful to have access to medical care and thankful for healthy children who are not facing any life-threatening illnesses.

Instead of this...

I wish Steve would stop snoring and hogging the only sheet we possess.

This...

I am so thankful that my husband is home, sleeping next to me in bed, safe and sound. And clearly alive, with all that snoring going on.

Instead of this...

I wish Sam would leave me alone for two seconds so I can pee without being asked a million questions.

This...

I am so thankful that my boy is speaking so clearly and has the curiosity to ask questions about things around him (even if the questions are centered around my lady bits).

********

Instead of looking around and comparing and wanting and wishing and hoping for other things, I am trying to make more of an effort to realize that everything I have is more than sufficient and to be satisfied with what I've been given. NOT ALWAYS EASY ("do as I say! not as I do!") but when you look around, we all have blessings coming out the wazoo. Be thankful!

(Side story- When Steve and I realized at 4am this morning that we were sleeping on a deflated air mattress, Steve rolled over and said, "Why did you break it?" And a man that can make me laugh about that at 4 in the morning is a keeper. Then he brought me Starbucks. Because he's a saint, of course.)

A Molly update and a Saturday morning walk to learn about "prehistory" in Korea (also, a bajillion photos)

10.04.2013

If you've been reading for any length of time, you'll remember Molly's medical drama that began on our trip to Korea. It has consumed most of our time in this new country, from sweating it out at various medical clinics (quite literally) to getting up throughout the night to administer medicine to worrying and stressing over the results we'd be given at her next doctor's appointment. Friday afternoon, my fears were relieved when I learned that the results from her latest blood work showed her white blood cell counts were increasing. (AMEN AMEN AMEN.) We will test again in a month to confirm that they are still rising, but as of now, the doc here is calling her healed. Thank y'all so very much for the thoughts and prayers for Molly (and me, my sanity, and I). And if you could please continue praying that none of us ever get sick here for the next two years, that would also be much appreciated. Thaaaaaaanks!

In other news, we went out in search of a fabled pumpkin "patch" this morning and instead of getting awesome shots of that, we wandered around a "prehistory" park.

Remember how Koreans stack rocks for good luck? All these Korean children had stacked rocks on this ledge. My children came through and pushed all the rocks "back where they belong" and probably cursed about 4 different families in the process. Such good little ambassadors.

But wild dogs are ok.

His shirt says "I am 2" and it's the last week he can wear it without being called a liar.

These weren't creepy at all. Just ten or so monkey men in varying degrees of nakedness.

I have no clue what these things are, but they're like the mascots for our little area in Korea.

"I see pay-gound!" Ooh sadly it was just that spider. (?)

We came across some cages full of guinea pigs. And this ties in with prehistory how?

Who even cares? Molly thought they were hilarious.

Here she is showing her audience (not pictured: no fewer than 12 Korean fans) how funny these pigs were.

Most of the park was like this- statues depicting what times were like during "prehistory" (slaying wooly mammoths with rocks and sticks, carrying antelopes on sticks, women with no tops carrying half-naked children- I feel like this park should be rated PG13). I had no idea so many countries and flags existed during this time period. This trip = educational.

Seeing wildflowers like this in the fall makes me almost giddy for spring (and side note: this is strange because I hate spring. Spring = gateway to summer. Summer = hell on earth. Literally.)

Steve- will always offer to carry children | Sam- will never smile on demand

THIS. This is what we came for. And it was all locked up after we got done learning all those fascinating things about prehistory. The pumpkins grow up in the air on these little trellis thingamajigs and hang down. Talk about the perfect photo! (And perfect time to invest in a quality bike helmet) We might try again, but with the language barrier, it makes asking to "just go take pictures" slightly difficult. I need to make friends with a bilingual Korean who wouldn't mind hanging out and doing silly things like this with me.

This is the post that never endssss... yes it goes on and on MY FRIENDSSSS....

And this all happened before noon! Next we headed over to the dinosaur playground. You can't drag kids through a prehistory park and not take them to the dinosaur playground...

His sunglasses only took forever and 3 days to arrive, but now that he has them, he "needs" them. (Until he doesn't anymore and I need to hold them.) He's Mr. Cool.

Steve- my only willing subject

I know what you're wondering, and the answer is yes, they are this cute in real life. And Molly's fingers are still deliciously chubby.

Her new favorite thing is to pull up her shirt, tuck it beneath her chin, and parade about while slapping her belly and chuckling to herself.

After I took this picture, a little group huddled around her, a little boy gave her a wildflower, and she promptly threw it on the ground and blew him a kiss. Heart. Breaker. (They all thought this was hilarious, especially since she continued with her old man chuckle as she toddled away.)

We made it back to the car in time for Molly to konk out for a power nap and for Sam to complain that his feet hurt and he wanted his shoes off (NO NO NO OMG THE STENCH PLEASE GOD NO). Kiddos are stirring (aka whining very loudly from their cribs) and it's time to see what we can get into this afternoon. As soon as I wake up Steve, that is. (Being married to me is exhausting apparently.)
