We had originally planned to rent a small john boat from the marina near our house and let him cast and reel to his heart's content. But it was incredibly windy and the water was too choppy for boat rentals so he settled for hanging out on the dock.
Will and I lasted approximately 6.5 minutes in the freezing wind before we had to walk back to the car and head home for a morning nap. I also had to decorate the house because I just dropped the ball all over the place for this birthday.

last picture as a 5yo |
I'm not sure if my lack of preparedness was due to my complete resistance to the idea that my baby was turning 6 (that's such a big year!) or just because I am more scatterbrained than ever. Maybe we can attribute a little bit to both. I must have made 64 different trips to Target for singular items, on top of sending Steve to the grocery for similar trips. And yet I still don't have bread for school lunches. Go figure. But we do have gummy worms and blue icing for the cupcakes so maybe we aren't on the losing end completely. I try to make birthdays really special for the kids because we have so few traditions due to the nonstop moving, and I like for this one thing to be a constant in their little lives. I want them to realize how special and adored they are, and that they are worthy of complete, pull-out-all-the-stops celebration. Because they are.

All smiles for being six!! |
He came downstairs this morning and informed me that not only was he taller, but he had also outgrown his underwear. See? It didn't use to show his hiney like that last night. He needs new underwear. Big boy 6yo underwear. I'm sure I can get some on one of my Target trips while I sob like a crazy person in the boys' underwear aisle.
Sam is one sweet six year old. He has a heart of gold, sticks up for the underdog, is forever his daddy's fishing partner (and he will tell anyone who will listen, including random strangers who are fishing), loves macaroni and cheese, brushes his own teeth (and then requires someone to smell his breath), makes his bed, entertains Will when I need him to, antagonizes Molly to no end, loves balloons, blows me kisses as he walks into school each morning, blows me kisses as I shut his bedroom door at night, and blows me kisses during mass when he knows we aren't allowed to talk. He loves building Legos, he can write all of his letters and is beginning to sound out words to spell. He can count to 100. He is basically a boy genius. He will also tell you that he's a basketball player. He loves playing baseball at Mom mom's house. He kicks soccer balls inside our apartment. He runs like the WIND and finally ate broccoli (and loves it!) so he can be even faster. I love this sweet child with all my heart and pray that he continues to light up not only our lives but the lives of those around him as well. I LOVE YOU, SAMMY LAMBY!
xo,
Mommy
I hope he has a great birthday! :)
ReplyDeleteAwwwww.....hard to believe he is 6! Where does the time go? We do the same thing, make birthdays extra special. That's a day just for them. We even usually let them pick what we eat for dinner that night. :) Happy birthday Sam!
ReplyDeleteI truly can't believe he is 6! How is that possible?! Glad he had a good birthday!
ReplyDeleteAww! Happy belated birthday to Sam! A boat would have been awesome, but I can definitely see the chop in the background of your photos. And being out there all cold and seasick is not fun!
