For me, meeting internet people at truck stops is no weirder than picking up craiglist finds at strangers' houses

7.24.2012

Life has been pretty slow around here lately. Hence, my overall lack of blogging.

My sister sucked it up and made the trip back up for her second, and final, round of collegiate birth control. I have a feeling that she won't forget this summer's lessons anytime soon. You're welcome.

I also met a blog friend, Amanda, while she and her husband (and furbaby Piston) were driving through to Georgia. They were driving nonstop from Kansas, so they couldn't hang out long. Obviously I suggested we meet at a truck stop, since that is close to the interstate and easy to find, and not at all creepy. "Bye honey! I'm off to the truck stop to meet my friend from the internet!" No one around here even blinks when I say things like this anymore. Naturally, I took some fudge. Everyone needs some snacks on a roadtrip.

Yes, I met her in my yoga pants. Time has a way of getting away from me on days that end in Y. Also, yes, I am scheduled for a hair cut tomorrow. When did it get so freakishly long and bleh? Enough appearance critique for now. Let's move on to a Pinterest project.

Obviously, since we've lived in this house for a full year, I have decided that it is high time to put something on Sam's walls. I've got Auburn on the brain lately and just wanna go to a game SO BAD. But since I can't, I will deck Sam's room out with orange and blue.

For this most complicated and detailed project, you will need some large canvases.

Then paint them. I tried using a roller, but paint just splattered everywhere. I freaked out for a minute (white! chairs!), but then realized the paint was washable. (Aaaaaaaaand exhale.)

Since I am making canvases with words on them, I decided that I want the words to show through in blue. Had I realized this project was actually going to be a success, I would have tinted the blue to be a bit darker. Rookie mistakes. After allowing the canvases to dry, I taped out my words with painters' tape. I was going for a haphazard look, but if you wanted more precise spacing and such, you could probably measure and pencil it out first. Honestly, that just sounds too labor-intensive for my liking, so I went for the random look. Steve calls it "chabby cheek." And that is just too funny to correct.

Come on. Did you really expect this to say something else?

After placing your words on the canvas with the tape, you can paint over the entire canvas with the color you would like for the background. Warning: this will initially look like total crap and you will question whether you just wasted a lot of time and effort on this. Stay the course, this project is not over yet.)

This is the point where I was thinking, "CRAP, I wasn't going for THIS kind of haphazard look!" But keep in mind, this is just the first coat of paint over the blue. It took approximately four coats to come out looking like a real orange. And instead of taking all the pictures around the same time of day to give you an accurate idea of what the color looks like at each stage, I instead decided to take them as I completed each coat. So these colors are not at all true to life. This is no Pinterest-ready tutorial, as I imagine none of you were actually expecting from this blog.

Another coat..

After a few more coats, it's time to pull off the tape! Nervous! Excited! Scared that it really will just look like crap under there! So many emotions!!

SUCCESS!!!! OVERWHELMING SUCCESS!!!

At this point, I pretty much made everyone stand around and watch me peel the rest of the tape off. All hail the Queen of Crafts!

Had I known this project would actually work, I think I might have done a little color-testing prior to starting the project. This "dark blue" actually came out a little closer to Gator blue, but I don't think that detracts all that much from the pure awesomeness of the end result.

Another canvas painting was in order. Can you guess what it will say?

Liz was right next to Molly. Fear not, people with CPS on speed-dial.

Pure. Awesomeness.
Besides the fact that I cannot do basic math, therefore, none of the spaces are even and nothing is remotely centered, I think it looks pretty Sam good. (See what I did there? I make up for my lack of general math knowledge with my quick wit. AHAHAHA.)

One wall in his room is windows, another is a closet, and I put some homemade "art" on the third wall. Maybe next year I'll get around to decorating that last gigantic wall with something.

*Linking up with Amber at The Pinterest Project to highlight this little bit of awesomeness.*

  9. The "art" on Madden's wall is a set of decorated letters that I painted and made myself. Oh... They also happen to spell out Q-u-i-n-n. Whatever.. I just keep saying I'll make Madden's letters for the next house. I mean we won't live here forever, right??

  12. I am so impressed! At first I was all "Why did she paint it blue than paint orange over it? Where's the blue going to come into play? That was a lot of extra work! WHAT'S GOING ON????"

Then I understood and it made PERFECT sense.
